Our arrival at Padang, Indonesia
After the long
travel, we have arrived in the Minangkabau International Airport in Padang at
2:44 in the afternoon. We have passed through the immigration area then get our
checked-in baggage. I instantly saw our Indonesian buddies waving their post
card with a phrase “SEA-TEACHER FELLOWS”. They were smiling at us and asked if
we were Ryza and Christine. We exchanged our introductions and decided to ride
the car to find a place to eat. Along the way to the restaurant, I have noticed
that the streets were just like the streets in the Philippines. It was a busy
day for Indonesians walking in the streets of Padang even with the warm weather.
One can easily notice that most of the house structures have distinctive
features of roof design and rich decoration on the walls. Bang Rhyzki informed
us that the roof structure was based from the buffalo horn which symbolizes
status, courage, strength and fighting spirit.
Delicious Indonesian Cuisine
Finally, after the long wait we
were able to see the Universitas Negeri Padang in person. We ate in the Lamun
Ombak restaurant where several delicious dishes were served on us and most of
them were spicy foods. According to them, Indonesians prefer spicy foods and most
of their foods are mixed with spicy ingredients. After converting our money
into Indonesian rupiah, we went to our dormitory where we will stay for a
month. They welcomed us by having Indonesian snack and welcoming. We met Ibu
Dewi who is the owner of the house and she’s also a teacher in UNP. Mrs. Sutria
acquainted us with the house rules and let us choose the room we want because
we were the first ones to arrive. They let us rest for a while because we planned to go to Transmart to buy some necessities. Together with our buddies
namely Gema, Sysi, Aflah, and Sir Rhyzki we went to the Transmart. We shopped
for groceries and ate in the Bakso. They recommended for us to eat the Nasi
Betutu Goreng. I have already assumed that it is delicious and I was right
although it was really spicy. We ended the night by bidding our “sampai jumpa”
to each other.
